SMALL ARMY

HELPS SHOOT

THE FINAL KISS

In actual production the climactic kiss of the production sequence is photographed in the presence of the 51 assorted technicians in the picture below, plus 30 others who do not appear in the picture. Their functions are listed to the left. Although the size of this contingent would have staggered an old-time movie maker, it is not unusual by current Hollywood standards. It is due in part to the sheer prodigality of the industry, in part to tremendous feather-bedding by movie unions. But it is also necessary to have many experts standing ready to ply their trades at a moment's notice should anything go wrong on sets whose inflexible overhead, active or idle, is some $2,000 an hour.

Note: To make one picture, which was a double-page spread in the original "Life" magazine article, I had to scan and piece together a couple pages so that you can get the full picture. I also decided to include the full-sized separate pieces of the picture so that you can get better detail.
